Family foundation concerns – The Liman Foundation, originating from assets of another major foundation, has made substantial grants to organizations seemingly intersecting with Judge Liman’s own court docket!
Stock ownership conflicts – Judge Liman owned stock in T-Mobile and entertainment-adjacent companies while presiding over cases involving those sectors! This is an apparent severe breach of judicial conduct code.
Invasive and potentially unconstitutional subpoenas – In one active case with Blake Lively, Judge Liman has permitted invasive and harmful subpoenas against over 100 small independent content creators, many with limited financial means, compelling disclosure of personal and private information, including banking and credit card information, phone numbers and addresses, exposure of anonymous creator identities, and more.
These subpoenas were highly damaging, totally inappropriate, and potentially unconstitutional. They could have chilling implications for everyone’s free speech rights, as there was no evidence to support the wrongdoing of any of these creators.
A minor was even allegedly subpoenaed- without the permission of their parents no less, which is apparently unlawful as well.
Exposure of minors – The docket in that same case contained photographs of a creator’s children filed by a party, which have been allowed to remain visible without apparent judicial concern.
Prior recusal controversy – Judge Liman was the subject of a Wall Street Journal investigation into judicial conflicts of interest, and was found to have failed to recuse himself in multiple cases involving financial conflicts, which is inconsistent with the law.
Judge Liman has recently presided over several high-profile entertainment industry cases, including ongoing litigation involving prominent Hollywood figures. This raises questions in light of his family’s unusually deep ties to the entertainment industry, including a brother who is a Hollywood director and producer (Doug Liman). Doug Liman even admitted to flying on Steven Spielberg’s plane and much more as a child- the Hollywood ties run deep with the family.
I believe these concerns speak directly to [Organization Name]’s values of [integrity / ethical governance / judicial fairness — customize]. These issues are receiving international attention and pushback, and could create concerns for any organizations linked to this judge. Little Peconic Yacht Club — Emphasize how ongoing media scrutiny and ethics questions could reflect on the club’s prestige and harmony among members. Emphasize international attention into this, challenges to club’s reputation (potentially), and integrity and mutual respect among members.
New York Legal Assistance Group (NYLAG) — Focus on the judge’s rulings (like on subpoenas etc) that impact small creators or financially vulnerable parties, especially where there’s a perceived imbalance of power, given NYLAG’s mission to protect the rights of individuals with limited financial resources! These actions risk chilling public expression and disproportionately burden those NYLAG exists to serve.
Supreme Court Historical Society — Emphasize how perceived judicial conflicts of interest harm the long-term credibility of the judiciary. The Supreme Court Historical Society plays an important role in preserving public trust in the judiciary’s integrity.
